Try to see if you can get better equipment, gain some skill and/or character levels, get some food that boosts your stats (only the last one you eat affects you and only for the duration of the food meter), make some potions for a quick healing during battle and finally learn their attacks.
This goes for any point in the game, every time normal enemies or bosses start to deal high damage to your character.
If you can, try raising a "battle" monster or two by giving them an item every day, it gives them permanent stats so on top of levelling them it can make them stronger than you fairly quickly.
Of course, very agressive monsters, mages and bosses are better for that purpose but even a weak whooly can turn into a decent tank.
Some have quirks that are really helpful.
Using this option allows you to do things like declare your love for the NPC or ask them to adventure with you.
