It remains useful throughout the game for accuracy if you're leveling up specific crops by only using one or a few of each seed, makes it a bit faster to plant some new ones down - I used it a lot!

I haven't even started playing but it'd be useful to know beforehand.
It is particularly helpful with the axe and hammer when taking on stumps and big rocks.
For the hoe it also moves you forward between the actions, allowing you to do 3 tiles quickly.
Just spam click and if the action happens in three quick successions on its own, then it worked.
It's frustrating when a rare drop vanishes like that.
EDIT: I was more talking about the tripple whack with a hoe for what you quoted though.
