The things to consider would be that you can only marry the opposite gender. Aside from that, the only real differences are the sprite texture, 3D model, voice and which gender's bath area you're allowed to access.

The choice is yours in the end.

It's kinda funny that you can only marry the opposite gender in the game considering that as a girl there are several cases where they allude to the female main character being interested in girls (such as saying that the female character must be look forward to seeing the other girls in their swimsuits) and the ghost attached to Dolce is clearly a lesbian.

On the bright side it seems RF5 is going to allow you to chase after the boys and the girls regardless of gender.

Wait, it was like this in the original 3ds version, but the updated "special" let's you marry either gender without going through the sprite swap bs, I thought? At least on the switch and xbox I have the option to play as Lest and romance a guy. Is the steam version different?

As fore if Lest or Frey(?) has different experiences, I'm not too sure. I've only played as Lest and I didn't really care to marry anyone when playing on the 3ds.

Added: looking it up more, it does seem that the feature didn't come to special. Oops. I'm not sure why I thought it did but it did feel like I've been "romancing" the guys on xbox and switch? Huh, my bad.

You can pick up a mod that allows you do marry anyone. It will lead to some... interesting dialogue sometimes but the option is there.

But yeah, the game will still believe you are the gender you swapped from when it comes to dialog and which bathroom you're allowed to enter. The only character who will know you're a boy instead of a girl or vise versa will be you. It's really only a sprite and voice clip change. Even using the New Game+ special order to change your appearance to Frey/Lest instead won't change what gender the game considers you to be.

you're correct, you cant marry anyone, just swaps the options around
