Survival mode not working

Any time I try to start a new survival game it takes a very long time to load like 10 minutes or so, and then when it finally loads up I am already dead without ever getting into the game. Can someone tell me if that is due to the amount of mods I have in my game or is survival mode just that buggy right now?
