Oh and in phase lanes it tends to follow a ship while I try to wasd away, fighting me for camera control for a few seconds before I can scroll back to where I was, very frustrating when I want the camera to never lock on to anything and just stay where I put it :(
I just wish I didn't have to fight the interface/camera constantly to do something.
FYI i agree it is so annoying
The worst part is when I try to zoom to an asteroid or a planet, and there is a ship in a lane nearby, be it a trandeship or warship/escort ship, and the camera just jumps out and refuse to zoom to the planet/asteroid in question.
Even hitting wasd does not help much, as the camera keeps getting stuck on ships :(
If only the camera would just go where I move it and stay there.
Maybe I'm playing the game wrong, but I generally zoom to the gravity well where some kind of action is happening, or where I am building or doing something.
Having the camera glide all around, or follow random ships into a phaselane when I'm trying to do stuff makes me wonder what they were thinking adding that function, like, when is that more useful than letting the camera stay where I put it?
Alas, I fear I am just shouting into the void. I would hope that this is something that could easily be fixed.
However, to me it seems like it is just a matter of disabling some code or add an option for it, since this feature must be something added onto an otherwise stationary camera. But then again, having written some gnarly code myself in the past, I know that what seems like it should be obvious and easy to fix, might not be.
Still, I hope it can be added, it would remove most of my frustrations with this game, since it is really annoying when it happens, but the game in general is a lot of fun :)

they did some teaks for the missile and strike craft issues for cameras:
"Added setting to disable zooming to cursor attaching to strike craft or missiles. This is now default behavior."
For more sugestions to the Devs, their offical discord in the suggestion channel is probably the best place to get the Devs attention to look into it.
