How the AI decides on a target and implements an attack is a strange thing at the moment.
I’ve had the perception that AI is set to focus fire on the faction more dangerous for them at any given moment: so, if you raise your ships cap, rush some research, build more ships and add defensive modules around the planet…
The AI will drop everything and target you immediately bringing anything it has to bear, forming cease fire with opportunistic other factions that can damage you. It can be unpleasant, because the AI is smart enough and aggressive enough to not waste troops, if it can.
But the effect is that as soon as you leave your local cluster and begin a small conquest of a fourth neighbor, AI number 2 and 3 will ally to fight you.
I believe the solution for your problem for this SOASE 2 build (and other similar to yours), is to push for diplomatic cease fires early game with as many faction as you can.
How about putting a space-jump inhibitor in the system and trapping them
You have to research wormhole travel. Every race and faction has their own technology unlock for it. Defend their target location then hit back hard. Won some of my games using sneak attacks directly on the capital, circumnavigating all their front line defences and fleet, using the wormhole.
Some factions have the tec in the empire or civic tree, for others it's in the warefare tech tree branch.
He means in the gravity well they're attacking :) Carriers with bombers can be pretty effective against missile heavy fleets if you order the bombers to attack the missile ships.
