Also, after they've taken a planet, remember to cancel the attack order, or they'll just park their fleet in that gravity well and sit there for eternity - even if the the enemy is burning a direct path to their capital.
Ugh... Thats about right... In RTS is all about timings... and with AI taking their time makes orders pointless...Stellaris had alliance management quite a bit better with extra fleets simply following your main around, but its also much deeper and larger game with dozens of expansions... this bare bones alliance maybe we will get a better one down the line.
You can trade for it. If it is a fresh planet, they are usually pretty generous about it.
