I'm not sure I can really relate, having a lot of point defense will quickly diminish enemy strikecraft.
I don't know why spamming counter ships that deal with fighters isn't an option, though.
In my experience, they work really well, and are required to counter missile spam too.
Fleet composition sure, big fleets sure, double supply cap sure | fighter/bomber spam out the wazoo and the only counter is additional fighter/bomber spam just makes it worse.
I like watching battles as I imagine most players do. I am on nice hardware, and I can only imagine how it is for players on lesser hardware. Steam hardware survey lists the most common GPU as being a GTX 3060.
A possible solution to the performance impact would be to maybe make the carriers/ships/starbases have less fighter/bomber squadrons but make them stronger or something?

I must be missing or failing to understand something here because that is not what I experienced - I was playing TEC against Advent
Also, when it comes to countering strikecraft as TEC, I strongly recommend getting the flak burst module on a capital ship
