Sins of a Solar Empire II

Sins of a Solar Empire II

Never played Sins 1, is this one worth it?
As the title suggest I missed out on the older Sins of a solar empire and I was curious if it would be worth it to a player who's never played. I've played plenty of RTS games and even Stellaris (I don't know if they're similar, it just looks similar with how the map looks and battles). I really enjoy space games and have logged hundreds of hours in Stellaris, mostly just from watching the battles play out and the battles in this look incredible to sit back and watch, so would picking up Sins 2 be worth it to a completely new player?

probably even more worth it, since you get to experience it all for the first time

On a similar note, as someone who played Sins Rebellion to death.... What is new and innovative about this version of the game?

Cheers.

Is there a real use of strategy? I like games that force me to think and come up with ways to defeat either the AI or other player but I know some games is just "throw enough stuff at them and you'll win". Does the game make you come up with plans and strategies to win?

It's very much worth it. While Sins lacks some of the diplomatic options games like Stellaris have, it's by far the best RTS game for large scale space battles rn, so if you prefer combat over diplomacy it's a must buy

Not much gameplay wise tbh, the standouts are that missiles are actual objects now and can be shot down by turrets that actually track them, plus planets have moving orbits that regularly change their phase lanes, meaning planets that used to be cut off could suddenly become neighbors. There aren't many new units, but many mechanics have been overhauled and gotten more depth plus a metric ton QoL stuff. It's basically the same game as before, but better pretty much

Oh the moving orbits sounds interesting

Yeah generally speaking. Like i said above Diplomacy is a bit barebones and the Ai basically never engages with it, but as far as combat and eco tactics go there is quite a lot of depth, and the harder Ais are quite competent on that front

Yes.

This is totally worth the purchase. It's an RTS that you can run at your own speed and comfort levels in. Not sure what the negative nancys on here are complaining about. I have had this since it WAS in beta on Epic and it' s been pretty polished and stable the entire time. Just happy I get to play it in its entirety.

No, Sins 1 is still far superior. This game is far from a complete RTS experience, though it does look pretty so it's got that going for it.

Old timer to sins 1, I'm waiting for more info regarding the premium pack before investing in the game. Loved sins 1 but it had issues and from what I heard, the sequel fixed all the issues I had issues with. I might buy the base game and upgrade to the premium later on if given the option like I did with the first game.

This is mostly better than Sins 1 IMO. Cleaner and less cumbersome UI (though there are a couple misses like too-small tech buttons and market trade locked behind a submenu), deeper gameplay sandbox, much better performance, and more faction differentiation. Some of the more annoying mechanics like trade have been retooled entirely as well. Don't know enough about modding to compare moddability between the two, but Sins 2 at least supports it so here's to hoping it can carry that torch.

Now as for someone who never played Sins 1 that won't mean a whole lot, but basically Sins is a hybrid 4X/RTS game, more RTS than 4X. If you like RTSs you'll probably like this.

Sins is one of those rare RTS' where you can focus completely on Macro and ignore the Micro. By default your ships' abilities are casted automatically (which works fine), and trying to micro too much during combat can be very detrimental as not every ship is suited to fire on the run and inertia is a real thing for most factions. This leaves you to spend more time customising your economy, army groups and researching techs.

You really are'nt missing anything if you never played Sins 1. The gameplay is largely the same with each faction playing slightly more different than 1. In a sense it was like the transition from Age 1 to Age 2.

Ah, and the battles are gorgerous to look at.

I think I might be sold on this

No, the game honestly feels like it's in beta right now. It shows a lot of promise, but they made the retarded decision to not even let you change resolution, scroll speed or most basic UI features. They've also taken out a lot of the game settings.
Sins 2 is to Sins 1 what Supreme Commander 2 is to Supreme Commander 1 in that though the sequel looks and runs a bit better thanks to the cartoony graphics and updated hardware/engine, it feels like it's been made for Xbox gamers that are all meant to have the same identical hardware.
edit the settings file from launcher and you can set it.

You don't need to edit the settings file. Use Ctrl-shift-s in-game to open up advanced settings. We are working on making them more accessible and adding some missing ones.
