auxillary supply depot question

Tried finding this topic before posting so my apologies if it's already been asked.

What does this item actually do? The description in game says it just gives minor factions some support... does it make purchasing things cost less or do they get bigger fleets or what?

In one of the recent updates, the fleet call-in abilities of certain minor factions (Pirate Raid, Phase Raid, Defense Fleet) were given a much smaller radius so you could only use them on targets near that faction's home planet.

That depot provides a radius around the planet that you build it on so that you can use those call-ins nearby. It can be useful on planets near a contested area where you might need to drop a surprise fleet that otherwise wouldn't be available due to being out of range.
