Pirates missing?
I've had several games now and tried to look at the options for setting up games in-depth (not that there is much depth) but it seems like there are no pirate bases with pirate raids/bounties like the first game. Everywhere I look online, however, bounties and pirate raids are talked about. Is this a thing only on certain maps? Am I missing something? I'm not talking about pirate rebels for the TEC.

It would be disappointing if they were missing. I loved the idea of ensuring your defences were adequate from the get-go and eventually being able to wipe out pirates if you wanted to. It added a great rogue element to the game.

Certain maps simply don't have them. It would be nice if there was some indication on the map select screen as to whether or not they are there, though I suppose they are basically another minor faction now.

If pirates are what you are craving, I suggest checking out the map "Buzzsaw."

They are not missing but are also not guaranteed.
They are part of a roster of minor factions and spawn randomly on game creation.
Maybe some maps have fixed spawns for minor factions but I´m not sure about that.

Thanks both, appreciate the feedback. I'll check out that map, too.

You don't get the old-style pirate raids in this game anymore unless they exist as a minor faction on your map and you happen to have a planet right next to their gravity well. In that case they will trickle small attacks at you until you build up defences.

But the old random pirates raids with bidding wars from the previous title are gone now sadly. If a player spends enough influence points on the pirates they can order a specific pirate raid of their own, but its not the same mechanic. They are no longer a random threat to everyone on the map.

Pirate bases must be present. If a pirate base is present in a map then this means they will be a discoverable minor faction. Once you discover them you can use influence points to unlock their skills and use them. The last unlockable skill for the pirates is a pirate raid. However this pirate raid can only be used on planets you have vision on and within a radius of the pirate base, which is usually half the map on an average 6 player map.

So:
* Need to scout to find out if pirate faction present.
* If yes, then research influence points in the research tree to get enough to unlock each of their unique skills under the minor factions tab.
* Then you are able to launch pirate raids against gravity wells you can see at the time you activate the raid.

Yeah just checked out Buzzsaw thanks to Wuorg and saw the pirates minor faction (well, 5 of them) for the first time. It's a real shame you don't get the intermittent pirate raids where you have to hope you can outbid your allies so they get the raid on their doorstop rather than you getting it on yours. Here's hoping for a mod. Honestly I feel like installing the first game again. Aside from the pretty graphics, Sins 2 feels almost exactly the same, minus the fun of early game raids.

I recall the early game raids being a bit contentious when they were introduced in the first game, so I'm not surprised they don't work that way anymore. I am disappointed the pirates are just another minor faction now, instead of their own thing. That said, I have no doubt there will soon be a mod that makes them work the old way soon enough!

Yeah, I preferred it when the pirates were just a universal threat to everyone. It was more fun and it made more sense to me. Plus it was fun wiping out pirate bases in order to stop the raids for good.

I think I do prefer Sins 2 to Rebellion, if nothing else just for the graphics upgrade, but there is a lot I miss about Rebellion (and I was playing it recently, right before I bought this one). Rebellion felt like more of a challenge.

I just downloaded it and played it. Little things just made it better, such as some planets or moons being on different planes to the star, the research tree being more meaty (if not more confusing) and of course the pirates.

It's nothing mods can't fix. If I had a clue what I was doing, I'd make one. Hopefully a modder out there is also sentimental about pirate raids.

Edit: the game creation is WAY better in the first game too - you could make random games for certain numbers of players and edit quite a bit. Very bare bones in Sins 2

Actually you can spend influence for uncover minor factions, no need to find them directly.
Maybe I'm a little bit late? But there is a pirate mod now in Sins 2.
