The game basically boils down to overwhelming your opponent's defenses.

There's little other than that - if they build missile heavy fleets, you build flak vessels. That's most of the 'tactics' of the game other than simply going after fleet carriers with smaller ships.

The best way to go after an npc home planet with all their defenses is to ambush their fleet in some system and then swarm the planet. No other 'trick' is going to do it. If you can bribe a neutral faction to attack one of their systems, then do that as a distraction. Other than that..outproduce them.

Depends what is there, and what stage of the game.

But my advice is, build more ships. Rather than get caught up in counters, ambushes, or micro, just maco more. By the time you are attacking an enemy homeworld you should have a sizeable fleet. Defences in this game are fairly weak, so if you have been building ships you should have no problem beating them.

Concerning what ships to pick to "counter", there's a simple upper layer to it: Durability makes units with low pierce deal no damage, so if you're targeting something with high durability, try to attack that with units that have high pierce. Anything that shoots missiles is usually a good starting point ? :D

If you have only light frigates with 150 pierce, you probably won't be able to do much against a starbase with 500 dur.

Capital Ships have 500, Titans have 750 and Starbases have 1000.
Your point is still correct though. 150 Pierce is not going to do much against high Durability targets(compared to the amount of fleet points spent).

As for the OP:
It kind of depends on what stage of the game you are in, and which form of TEC(Primacy or Enclave) you are playing.
As Primacy, their Titan and Novalith super weapon can potentially stun their structures(they cant shoot for 60 seconds). Maybe get Culture to spread to their system, then make a combined attack of Insurgency, a Pirate Raid(minor faction ability) and your own fleet.
As Enclave, get as many nearby planets around their home planet. Build big garrisons, then set them to aggressive so that they invade the enemy home planet and join with your fleet.

If you are not at that tier yet, you might want to simply win a war of attrition. If all there is left is the enemy is their home planet, then focus on the "easy defenses" first(rather than the big starbases or capital ships) and take away as many turrets and support ships as possible, then retreat, replenish(you should be able to outproduce their capacity to rebuild the stuff they lost), then send the fleet in again, and again, until you broken through.

To add to this, the TEC has a pretty strong counterplay to massed defenses in the form of mid to high level Marza Dreadnoughts. Marzas get access to the missile barrage ability at level 6, which lets a fleet with 4+ Marzas erase any defenses smaller than a starbase. The solution for starbases is Kols or, if you're playing the Primacy, the Ragnarov titan. Kols have their beam weapons, which do a decent amount of damage. The Ragnarov has precise shot, a pierce 1000 ability that has an insane damage and rate of fire when the ability's at level 3 and you have the right item installed. At level 6 it gains access to a Novalith cannon of its own, which you can have it fire the instant it arrives in a gravity well to disable all defenses (including starbases) for a full minute.

Ogrov Torpedo Cruiser

Their intended purpose is to erase enemy defensive structures. They out-range almost all the defensive structure's ability to strike back; just be sure you don't warp them in on top of the star base. They hit hard on enemy capitals and titans too.

A stack of 10 will do the trick, though I like to have 20 or 30+ depending on how far into the game i am.
