So... I don't see any particular problem with the Vasari start.
Evacuators are the only ships in the Vasari Fleet (Titans excluded) carrying enough people to start a colony. If memory serves, each Evacuator carries 15k people on board.
I too prefer other ships to the mid game utility (drain planet) a Jarrasul provides, but I tend to see this as an objective to reach, instead of something I've been deprived of early game.
Antorak Marauder is probably my favourite cap ship in the Vasari roster. Nonetheless, early game you need a fleet that can sustain itself fast.
A capital ships progression chart I usually follow is
1 Jarrasul (start) - 2 Skirantra - 3 Skirantra - 4 Marauder - 5 Skirantra - 6 Marauder - Titan
After that, usually is Vulkoras galore, with maybe 1/2 Kortul
Vasari has the benefit to get up to 3 capitals early, so I usually tend to take what I get, so I can clear and colonize faster.
I'd like either Kortul or Antorak. But I learned to like Jarra. I can't play other factions properly, Vasari are just up my alley, beautiful design!
