First everything in Sins II is identical to Sins I, then it's a problem things have changed. Tough to please everyone I guess.
As far as the Kol (and other ships), the dev jounals go into more regarding the evolution of the ship designs/lore. Feel free to read more here. https://forums.sinsofasolarempire2.com/515013/sins-ii-dev-journal-2---exploring-the-kol-class-battleship
Basically the TEC largely abandoned energy weapons and went all in on physical weapons. The Kol beam being an exception of course.
The Gauss cannons of the Kol are by no means weak,
Gaussweapons are one of the strongest/best weapon types in Sins 2.
And with the right capital ship items, you can almost quadruple its damage, ignoring the increase which you can get from research and abilities.
The best I remember are those capital ships going down in Colony Wars on the PS1. The way the screen bleached-out for a moment, followed by the sound of the shock wave. Flippin' great stuff!
Thanks to the new engine the game now can utilize all of your hardware to run the game, which might allow as big maps as you decribed, depending on the hardware you run it on.
From what the early access on epic has shown, is that the game runs really well and smoothinly even in big fights with 10 players, despite many players using older hardware.
