Is this game worth getting?
I saw some reviews that said that this game was not converted over to the PC from the Xbox well, and here in the discussions I see that lots of people have problems with the game controls, achievements, crashing in cut scenes, on and on.

I really enjoyed this game when I last played it like 10 years ago. Is it worth buying on steam or is it too crappy to play and enjoy?

It is too crappy. I have a 1060 6gb and i7-8750h with 16 gb ram and it cannot run properly on this hardware. My hardware doesnt overheat, it only runs in the 50c range running this game maxed out, but the framerate is abysmal. The audio doesnt sync up. It has input delay. I wish someone would make a performance mod, until then, just play the Xbox version.

Ah, thanks for the heads up. I just have a laptop rn so it definitely wouldn't work out well for me. This is a really fun game so it's too bad that it wasn't given the functioning PC version it deserves.

Currently the biggest issue I'm having with the game is setting up the gamepad mapping. For some reason, the right bumper will not work with the game and it's a major oversight on the dev's end. If you're comfortable with playing with a keyboard, then I recommend getting the game when it's on sale, because it's worth playing at least once.

My specs are

GPU: 1070 8gb
CPU: AMD FX 8350
RAM: 16gb

And the game runs just fine at a relatively smooth 60 fps for me with drops only to 57 or so. As for controllers, I use a wireless 360 controller with absolutely no issues. I'm quite sure that most peoples issues are on their end and not due to the game itself. Like they probably have out of date drivers and such. I would say the game is worth it. Besides, it couldn't hurt to try it and refund it if it doesn't work.

I've just started playing (working on getting my 3rd outlaw) and I am struggling using the keyboard and mouse. It's the camera angles that are getting in the way - I often can't see my character because the camera is behind a fence or a building etc.

I've had no framerate issues at all and I have only a gtx 980Ti on a i5-6600k w/16GB ram. The graphics are very good for an old game.

I will try 1st person view to see if that helps....

My specs aren't nearly as good as yours and I had the same fps problem from the start. What really helped me was turning anti-aliasing off.Went from about ~20 fps to 60+.

I've been playing it through Proton (Steams way to run Windows games on Linux) running it off a 960m (laptop gpu) and It runs perfectly well for me, and is very enjoyable.

Played through the game recently with 60 fps+, no frame drops. Wouldnt advice putting in anti-aliasing though. Did it once and my fps dropped down to 15 xD

Its a great game but I tried to replay it today for the first time in a while and it seems WAY buggier than it used to be. Unable to movie without jumping first, the squirrel ammo flat out not working as intended. I'd avoid and go for a console version instead

I just bought this game the other day and began playing it. IMHO, "Yes. You should buy this game.". I just heard someone on YouTube mentioning it, and checked it out. I didn't realize the game was a decade old until I looked at the Store page after playing it.

It's a great game but it's literally been a buggy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ since launch. Back then the oddbox was widely ridiculed for its horrible performance and porting both on youtube and the old Steam community forums.

As time went on JAW simply updated the HD content into the game, further ruining the stability. Yes, you read that right. The original launch of this garbage heap was the SD version and it STILL didn't run.
After promising us free upgrades to the new one, we did eventually get the upgraded visuals. Does it matter though? No, because the game is still a mess to run and they actually ruined controls that worked at launch.

People complained that the game autodetected the xbox controllers and turned off M/Kboard. So what did the devs at JaW do? They patched it so that now it doesn't, but while controllers DID work, now they don't.
Let's not even get started on the inability to set your own control schemes in the first place.

As of 2021, I can't run this game I used to run at launch at 1080p because the screen gets massive and goes off center. If I run it in 1600x900, not my native res, it works fine but the controls are a debilitating mess.

So TLDR: Is the game worth getting?
On Xbox, or one of the HD console ports like PS3 yeah, definitely. I played the port on PS3 and it works fine for all gameplay and achievements, the PC and Steam just got screwed.
Here on steam? Hell no.
