True Ending
The developers did me dirty with the true ending scene, it was the biggest plot twist yet I'm neither happy or upset about it T-T

I didn't get closure lol

Although I agree it's bittersweet, I do think it's better than having an ending where everything works out in the end.

Yeah I wasn't very impressed by the true ending either.

I enjoyed it it's open ended kind of, it's just damn after that emotional roller coaster I needed something a bit more lol edit* I'll elaborate now that I've had time to process my emotions 😅. Everyone got to live out their lives that were messed up by the ruling, with the ones needing to work through their issues actually talking it out. Mark got to live his childhood with cathy, and Nicole with Kate, then when it was time to "settle down" jake and maria gave Mark and Nicole a chance meeting. Up to the player to determine if they end up or not. But I think everyone can agree that they'll be living happy lives either way.

Same, if there was just 1 last cycle going through the repaired world, it would be a grand ride out of the game.

True end is better than the first one atleast. That was depressing

I had a feeling this game would give an open ending, as I saw in Twitter that their inspiration for this game are NITW and Oxenfree.

It did made me process it after finishing the game. They did meet again, but not in the circumstances we expect. But there is a random chance you know, the whole probability that was themed in the game (quantum stuff and all).

Tbh. I too am a bit disappointed by the final ending they gave, just because it does not feel like it is actually something that fits this masterpiece and its story.
For me the Epilogue was not to be done. Only the part of reaching Cath, obv that had to be there to close the circle.
But Imho, they should have just closed it there leaving a real open ending and for us to imagine what kind of things could happen without The Ruling etc
Or (I know the following would have required lots of works. I would have been happy with just the reaching Cath scene, no Epilogue) they could have made a 4th cycle giving us the possibility to explore less important characters, visiting all locations (maybe via some kind of choices) and maybe even give us, through choices, the possibility to give Mark one of different variants of the ending of Epilogue.
Maybe one where he is just with his closest friends, like in the Epilogue, or in a romantic relation with one of the characters we choose via choices.

Giving some real freedom and all.. And a real open ending.

P.S.
I am not saying all of this bcs I wanted Mark x Nicole or other things (Tbh I was rooting for Cath from start to finish. Would have loved to play as her, even seeing some actual slice of her private life at the end of the 2nd cycle)
Anyway. Yeah, I am just saying all of this bcs I really believe the Epilogue does not fit well with the rest. Not because of what there is in it, but bcs it writes its own story without giving a chance to really imagine and live for real after Mark was free from the cycle that repeated that slice of his life 100+ times.

Agreed. I was also curious on Sofia and grandma. Same for Cath. I really like the bubbly, semi-unhinged characters.

Despite the ending at the cafe with Nicole that leaves you with a thousand thoughts, I always thought there was more than a friendship between Cathy and Mark, and they were dancing around it with their outings

That's wishful thinking and projection on your end. Cath is a lesbian, men and women can be platonic friends.
Ludens Jul 22, 2024 @ 7:37am
I think the main themes of the game is friendship and loss. That's what joined Mark and Nicole together. The achievement for the true ending called butterfly says "Accept. Let go." so after they accepted their loss and let them go (Jake and Mark's mom), they lost their connection. It was clear the romance was a subterfuge for dealing with their losses.
