Don't know what to do in early game

What am I supposed to do if I ring the bell, someone comes asking for a plant I am very sure I don't have. Can I make them go away? I tried using the will to travel and go to 3 random locations instead, but that yielded nothing! Then I gave a random plant to them to make them possibly go away and got some kind of penalty I think, then I raged and gave them more wrong plants on purpose and alt f4'ed.

There is a hint button when you are stuck. But you have all kind of letters and stuff that says you need to go somewhere. These are clues to find more plants etc. The customer can't go away it's either a plant you do have or you do need to do something else first. Hope this helps a bit.
