If you cannot solve a puzzle or identify a plant, you're stuck until you can. You cannot send customers away, you have to give them the plant they want - which means you must have found said plant (usually by solving an arbitrary riddle) and identfied it correctly.
This is a really nice game for people who love puzzles but don't want to strain their minds. The puzzles are varied and pretty easy. But they are mandatory, they are one of the main gameplay mechanics, and they aren't integrated in the story at all. (Basically, each day you draw a card with a riddle from a deck whose existence is never explained or even referenced, and you usually also receive a letter from a friend with a second riddle - because for whichever reason he likes to speak in riddles to you. Each riddle leads to a location where you can find plants.) I really liked it, but I don't think it's a game for you.
I probably should have described what I meant more like puzzles that are mini games that are just there to slow the player down or because some developers think hey! everyone loves a good puzzle and I cant think of anything more meaningful to add right here. :)
Thanks for the info, I really do appreciate it. I am going to go ahead and pick it up and see if I like it. Seems like MANY really do.
There are two main tools at your disposal - the plant encyclopedia and the map.
Every day, customers come to your door requesting plants. You need to read up the relevant entry in the plant they requested, find it in your collection and give it to them. That's the easy bit, so if you mis-identify a plant, you get penalised. Three penalties, and your mind breaks, requiring you to solve another puzzle.
You start out with relatively few plants. To obtain more, you need to follow clues to get to various map locations, usually in the form of "daily cards", letters or notes. These puzzles are slightly harder, but there's no penalty for mistakes - you just lose your "will to explore" and need to serve more customers to get it back.
Overall, I found the difficulty curve to be smooth, and the puzzles very well integrated into the story. The puzzles are challenging enough to be interesting but not so hard they are frustrating. The story is quite thrilling too!
The hints button will say I've got the plant around somewhere or I need to go find it. Maybe more.
Puzzles: difficulty varies a lot per person and puzzle. Some definitely click right away, and some have baffled me, usually because I wasn't seeing the clues in enough different ways or poking around enough. I like to explore at the end of the day if haven't nearly filled the dread meter... it's consequence free check (most?) spots that way (and the watering can fills the explore meter) After a few tries, I'm not above searching a clue in this discussion board to make it easy in a single player game, but that's a personal choice.
