Agent 64: Spies Never Die

Agent 64: Spies Never Die

Having to "spend" cyphers to unlock missions kinda sucks
Just finished act 1, had a great time. Then realized I was gonna be forced to go back and find secrets, or complete the altered contracts missions just to unlock the next story mission. Not a huge fan of that, the secrets and cyphers should be optional, and not mandatory to continue the campaign.

Just my $0.02

fingers crossed this gets changed. I really don't wanna replay act 1 on medium difficulty just to continue the story. I was hoping to do a full playthrough of easy, then medium, then hard, and finally, do all the challenge missions.
Honestly, I was thinking this too...until I realized how much fun I was already having with the game that I just did it anyway and breezed through it.
I actually quite like the system as it is. I definitely understand the idea that the campaign should just be straight level-progression, but the alternate modes and secrets and Contracts are actually really good fun and I'm glad the game incentivized me to go dig into them. There's a real possibility that if I'd just immediately blitzed the campaign from start to finish I would have stopped playing the game there, and completely missed a huge portion of interesting extra gameplay.

Maybe the signposting for different places you can actually earn progression points could be a little better, but it's definitely encouraged me to explore the game in ways that I otherwise might not have bothered to.
I mean I get what they were trying to do but at the same time they could have set it up in a way where you can play the entire story normally and then have optional challenger mods for the missions to make them incrementally harder via different variables like enemy spawn placement, health, damage, relocating some of the smaller objectives, adding traps like tripmines etc. Then they could tie special achievements or some unlocks to really cool stuff behind that. That way casuals can enjoy the game but at the same time the option is still there for the hardcore gamers and completionists to really challenge themselves.
Agreed, seems weird to have to replay story missions just to progress to the following story missions
I like the system as it is, personally.

Even worse, beating it on normal does not get you the ciphers for easy as well so you literally have to go back and replay most missions on easy after unless you want to play though on hard.
I hate it. Made me quit and refund the game. I just wanted to play on easy and speedrun through the game, then replay it. Damn shame.
this game isnt good enough to be doing that shih lol. Its a nostalgia grab with no uniqueness

You literally have to replay levels that barely take 3 to 5 minutes.

Sometimes I'm not sure I believe that people on Steam actually enjoy playing games lol

But why should anyone have to do that?
What's the point of having lower difficulties if you can't progress with them?

Forcing the player to redo levels just to continue a game even if they managed to finish it is just bad game desing.

Imagine if in Zelda you had to redo a dungeon just so you could be allowed to advance the plot.

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it "bad game design." That gets thrown around more than "objectively" at this point and it means nothing.

And comparing it to Zelda is really apples and oranges. A Zelda dungeon takes a considerable length of time. These levels are literally 4 minutes long. You guys have spent more time on this forum whining about game design you don't like than it takes to beat the entirety of Agent 64 lol

Replaying games works when it comes to bonus or high score.

Rareware knew how to do it with the unlockable cheat codes. If they implemented the cypher system the people back then would've told it was a clunky way to unlock newer levels.
