Also, if you use blue gems to unlock the extra ship slots, being able to build 2 or 3 or 4 ships at a time will make it go a lot faster than just one at a time.
To help collect materials for level 5 +, use the site above. Don't waste time travelling from port to port looking at every shipyard.
To raise your overall shipbuilding level, just make ships. You do get a 2x experience bonus the first time you make a ship, so you should do that when possible.
As you raise your level, try to build ships you want to use, and keep in mind the materials. Higher tier ships also give more exp.
Tier 1 and 2 use cedar, which you can purchase.
Tier 3 and 4 use spruce, which you can purchase.
Tier 5 and 6 use pine, which cannot easily be purchased
Tier 7 and 8 use alder, which cannot easily be purchased
Etc.
So it's better to build the highest tier for those materials. Once you're ready to move on from Sloops, it's recommended to focus on something in Tier 6 for example. You can farm materials in certain areas, usually through combat.
