JACOB !!! shut your trap for God's sake
To get an idea of what the game is like, I've seen part of the playthrough and the character of Jacob is incredibly annoying. Why doesn't he ever shut up. I hate these whiny millennials who talk like 5 year olds. Is he gonna be there the whole game? Incredibly annoying character. Golden retriever type of person

I thought that at first but spoiler alert part of the story arc is that he calms down, less like an excited puppy. He's still a bit awkward, but if you play nice they can become friends. Give him a chance, even if he's annoying to start off with. The whole experience changes the people involved, its a major point of the story

POV: You are a man in your 20s signed for a one-time job talking to a woman you don't know but saw in a School about 10 years ago who also signed for a one-time job - netflix version.
Jacob ruins the game. I had to Alt + F4 several times just to get him to shut the ♥♥♥♥ up. Nothing interesting about him and talks far too much especially when you're trying to do important things. I get they wanted filler but I would rather have ran around the game in complete silence on my own than to have to listen to some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying and poorly written character talk about ♥♥♥♥ I'm not interested in.

Jacob and Riley are written and voiced like zoomer trash when in fact they are millennials reflecting the writers intellect. Or rather lack thereof

Regardless of his "arc", I found him awful throughout the game. I enjoyed Oxenfree a ton, but I'm honestly pissed off I spent money on this one.

Wow I see the game from a different viewpoint obviously. It's considered a narrative driven game so his chatter is practically essential. In my opinion, his talking is charming. Plus, as the other person here, pointed out, he does change and become more quiet and reflective.

Yes. Jacob and my attitude to him, my answers or even at times not responding at all, are key factors for the story development. And, he is both for me: a little overwhelming in the beginning but charming as well. In my first playthrough I even became friends with him.

I could not disagree more. It seemed to me that despite the narrative, the game pulls you into a "bond" with Jacob, and your narrative choices are given little impact. To me, Jacob was a constant obstacle in the way of the plot. Hearing him name drop "Maggie Adler" was not enough to keep me interested in his life philosophy while he just kept on aloofin'. Meanwhile, continuing the story and elaborating on the events of Oxenfree gets pushed to the last few sections, then rushed through to throw out a conclusion.

Up to that point, the game does offer a few other interactions via the walkie-talkie, but these felt underutilized. Each channel has one person, sometimes, usually for a specific side-mission, and offer little else. Having the entire experience based around Jacob's life and how badly he wants you to like him was, from my standpoint, a baffling course of action.

I mostly agree with this take. I don't think Jacob was quite so unforgivable as the OP and earlier posts seem to feel. However I do feel the game was strongly funneling you toward warming up to Jacob, to the point where not empathizing with him felt like playing "the wrong way." What I mean is that you're not forced to be nice to him, but the way dialogue choices and certain events near the ending play out, it's almost like the writers are shaming you for not becoming BFFs with some guy you've known for hours. lol

I didn't HATE Jacob. But I did very, very strongly want some alone time during parts of the game. More than the few brief bits you get during paranormal events. The conversations were fun, though. And there were some funny moments, in that kind of tolerating-a-co-worker-you'd-never-hang-out-with-after-hours way.

I dunno. Maybe Athena would have been a better companion? :tbptongue:

A problem not really Jacob. The problem is there is only Jacob. You have no other connection but him and it start to get a little bit too much over time. Also he is a weak, clumsy, coward commenting everything with way to wanna be funny attitude which can be overwhelming after a while (more like you playing with early 20's than 30-ish people). He is pathetic and offer no comfort. I was kinda sure after a few moment with him he is not going to help in any situation and I was right. I don't hate him he just not working alone, he more a reliance. I was sure at the beginning if I go through a log or do a jump he will fall and I didn't wanted him to get hurt. He do felt a lot and help almost none. I think if they add the previous iteration group dynamic to the picture he would work way better. Having him to try playing the awkward but kind pacemaker would make him more likeable.
Imagine you are with Jacob who is your work mate, Evelyn who is your boss, Shelly the ranger and your kid Rex and maybe your father too (who also can be ranger with Shelly)!. There is a lots of dynamic can be ignited in a group like this and revealing past connections and you can decide whenever you want to jump in and defuse or escalate a heated situation or get some distance and just watch how the situation unfold. Then again sending different groups to handle different tasks while keeping everybody alive and well.
Would be a more interesting game.

This game has some really poorly written characters, and Jacob is the worst of them. I wish you could reply "SHUT UP ALREADY" whenever he opens his mouth. All of this is made worse by the fact that he's a total beta loser who is rich enough off inheritance to be a useless slob too. Am I supposed to like the guy?

All the voice acting is horrible. I turned the game off after less than a hour. The main characters voice was unbearable. A non stop unamused sounding "um, ok" type of talking. I knew this game was garbage and ruined as soon as I saw the Netflix logo.

I'm pretty certain he states in the game that he's not actually rich, he just inherited the house and still has to work, that's why he was working with Riley.
