How do you save?

How do you save the game? I'm pretty early on and can only play in short bursts and keep losing significant progress. It is not clear where the checkpoints are.

There are safe rooms with save stations. Save stations are the yellow machines on the wall next to toolboxes where you can store your items. In most difficulties (Friendly is the only difficulty where it is free) they cost 1 token (coin) to use. As far as I’m aware there are no checkpoints.

The first map is found in a safe room, so if they haven’t made it to a save station then they haven’t found the map yet.
