Magic spells seem low-damage

I am trying my best to play as a mage, but even after dumping 10 points into Wisdom, and wearing Wizard's robes and having 100 Spellcast, my Cipher Spear still does *less* damage than a powerful sword swing, or an arrow from a bow.


My statline:
MIght 3
Guile 6
Wisdom 10
Persona 2

Weapons:
Fine Sword
Fine Bow

Cipher Spear is just not a great spell, you'll find better ones eventually

Completed the game, did not find any better direct damage spells, only some summons.

Utility spells were find

there's a pretty good one in the Endless Realm. Also wearing a fully upgraded wizard robe give a large buff to spell damage.

My robe was fully upgraded. By the endless realm spell do you mean that fast-casting low-damage one?
