Never mind I save scummed my way across
I ended up doing the same thing (save scumming). I tried writing down the numbers I got correct, but they are different every time. I tried recording which positions were correct but those change every time too. I'm not sure what the trick is supposed to be.

It's spelled out in another thread here, but in brief:

The ones' digit of the sum of the current column is the next button.

I didn't get it at first either, but i read a few others that were confused by this like I was and the Math Puzzle once you knew what it was made sense. The poem does not help at all figure out it's basic math to solve the puzzle.
Basically if a row is like:

9 | 6 | 9 |
0 | 0 | 1 |
7 | 5 | 6 |

then you'd step on 0 first, then add up the row which is 9 + 0 + 7 = 16 (16 - 10 like in the poem = 6) which means you hop on 6 next. Then 6 + 0 + 5 = 11 so you hop on 1 next. Then 9 + 1 + 8 = 18 then (18 - 10 = 8) so you'd hop on 8 next. Etc.

It's a simple logic puzzle that wasn't well explained by the poem.

Yeah, the poem is weird. We need a new poem....and dont make the art team do it, they carried the game too much😁👍

i guess the poem was written originally in chinese or korean and it was sooooooo brilliant, but then it was translated.

Part of the problem is I don't think the poem is really meant to be clues but a puzzle. And a hard, confusing puzzle at that, one that would stump even the writer's colleagues. Waves of enemy soldiers -> columns, your "archers" killing off each wave's tens' digit and reducing it to the ones' digit is spelled out twice, the only thing that is poorly clued (imho) is taking the sum of the column you're standing on. Presumably that's the "each wave deadlier than the next" but you'd never see that without knowing the solution.

In addition if the 3 numbers don’t equate to 10 or higher then then number you do get is the next number
