Controller Issues

Hi. We are loving SuperTux and have completed many levels but we are struggling with the action/shoot button on our controller. We are running steam on a intel Mac Mini with a PS4 controller. I've edited the controller settings outside the game in Steam and in the SuperTux Steam config options but when in game the controller can only jump. When I try to configure joystick in-game, I click manual joystick and try to configure the buttons but the game doesn't receive the PS4 controllers button pushes and the request to "press button" just stays there unresolved. We sre new to Steam but this does seem a Supertux related issue not Steam. Do you have any advice. Thanks....

I should add I can use the Circle and X buttons in Supertux to start a level but when actually playing the game it only seems to receive pushes from the circle button.
I've also tried enabling Steam input to the controller or sticking with the default settings in the Steam supertux controller config...
