How does the brainwash of the emotions work?

I mean, the thing was that they used fear to keep the poeple inside, telling them they would die if they go outside... So how could they feel fear in the first place?

i think it's not fear it's just "being dead would kinda not be cool"

Fear is the human reaction that will activate your survival instinct, without it you'll just not take precotion or anything since you'll litarally don't get WHY dying would be uncool or dangerous or anything. So for me it's just not possible to confine with those arguments if they don't feel fear, since they'll just go outside everytime without even realising they're in danger doing so.
