NEW fix for FMV issues!
After trying the other fix listed in the forums (ddhack), I still wasn't happy with how the videos looked. DDhack adds scanlines to the video, making them appear dark and less detailed.

I decided to look around for another DirectDraw wrapper that might work better, and I found one! Aqrit's ddrwapper fixes the issues without adding scanlines, so the FMVs play smoothly and look great. Check it:

1) Download Aqrit's ddwrapper here: http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html

2) Modify the aqrit.cfg file to the following:

;;; www.bitpatch.com ;;; RealDDrawPath = AUTO BltMirror = 0 BltNoTearing = 1 ColorFix = 0 DisableHighDpiScaling = 0 FakeVsync = 1 FakeVsyncInterval = 14 ForceBltNoTearing = 0 ForceDirectDrawEmulation = 1 NoVideoMemory = 0 SingleProcAffinity = 1 ShowFPS = 0

3) Copy the aqrit.cfg and ddraw.dll files to your Oddworld game directory. That's it!

Notes:

  • This wrapper does not change the resolution to your monitor's native resolution like ddhack. Instead, the game will run at it's original resolution.
  • You may need to adjust the FakeVsyncInterval value if the video has flickering. Check the info on the link above for more details on that. The default mostly worked for me, but there were a couple times the video started to flicker, and changing it to 14 eliminated that for me.

Have fun!

07/26/2016 Update: For me at least, this is no longer an issue in Windows 10 with the latest Nvidia drivers. No need for any fixes, the FMVs play just fine right out of the box now! If you're having issues, maybe now is the time to upgrade to Windows 10 :)

Thank you so much for pointing this out! I would also like to add that if the screen stays black but you still hear sound, try setting "NoVideoMemory" to 1 or 2.

Thanks this fixed the video lag and took away the lines as you say. Now, how to run in native resolution?
ieatyoualive404 Jul 8, 2014 @ 1:57pm
I found that 1 for "NoVideoMemory" crucial on my laptop. Win 7 64bit, core i5 and nvidia graphics. Video lag is present no more, game working perfectly fine :)
Thanks!

Worls like a miracle, athough I had to set the NoVideoMemory to 1 (Intel processor + GF graphics). I still can't properly exit the game, though (had the same problem with DDHack). Otherwise, perfect. I have a question though: is there a way to have the game fullscreen? I have a WideScreen laptop and when I run the game, it is shown in a square in the middle of the screen with black borders on both sides. I'd be grateful for a hint on how to fix this.

Widescreen isn't really possible with this game, due to the backgrounds being pre-rendered. There's literally nothing to see beyond the original aspect ratio.

BUT WAIT! There's a "New 'n' Tasty" full HD remake of the game coming out pretty soon:

I know about it for 1+ years, so what? It isn't coming to PC for a good while but when it comes, I'll definetly buy it. But that doesn't mean I don't like the original game.

Thanks anyway for the answer. I thought there actually is a way to stretch the game to fit widescreen. Ah, well... I'm glad I can play this again. The game hasn't aged and those hand-painted backgrounds still look amazing. Resolution may not be as big as in today's games but I never was a graphics zealot.

Using this edit causes my screen to just be black with the game running still. I can press button inputs and stuff, but the screen is black. Using DxWnd makes it work but i want fullscreen, not windowed mode. Anybody familiar or able to help?
