Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

More Mudokons than Rupturefarms had on record?
So i've just finished off the game, it's been an absolute blast revisiting this childhood gem, along with it's sequel. Though there's one thing that struck me as odd around the time I arrived at the Zulag 4 section; the status boards that display the current amount of employees left, casualties and escapees was showing that I had saved more than the standard 99 mudokons, cumulating at a total of 102 saved just before dropping into the board room and a total of -3 employees left in the factory.

It didn't affect anything gameplay wise, I still got the 100% reward and the good ending for the effort, but has anyone else experienced this? Or can anyone possibly provide an explaination as to why this happened?

Nope. I just finished the game today, going through every secret location there is and saving every mudokon. There is exactly 99. The -3 casualties and 102 mudokons must be a counting bug.

This is a month old, but I think I've pinpointed the glitch.
You know that you can go back to a prior checkpoint so the game saves the Mudokons you rescued, right? Well, except for a few rooms, and they're all on the Paramonian and Scrabanian Temples. If you save the Mudokons in the secret rooms, but instead of finishing the trial, you go back and out through the trial door, the game will count the Mudokon as saved, but it'll respawn again in that trial room, when you enter it again. I only did this once in that secret room that only had 1 Mudokon, so in the end I only had 100 Mudokons and -1 employees. I guess 102 and 103 Mudokons comes from you saving the Mudokons in other rooms.

It should work in any of these:
Paramonian Temple Trials: a secret room with 3 Mudokons
Scrabanian Temple Trials: two secret rooms, one with 1 Mudokon and one with 2 Mudokons

To see if you have this glitch, you'll have to reach Rupture Farms again. When you reach the first scoreboard, it should read 51 or more Mudokons, instead of 50 (49 from previous areas + 1 from the entrance).

Also, you get the secret gallery at 99 or above Mudokons. If you already have 99 Mudokons by the Boardroom, you don't need to save that final Mudokon.

I can confirm this happened to me - i completed one of the Paramonia Temple trials twice, first time i rescued the mudokons in the secret area, but forgot to light the torch before exiting the room. Repeated this level to light the torch and found the 2 mudokons had respawned and were saved twice. In total i saved 101 mudokons (99 mudokons, 2 of which were saved twice).

Does anyone know if having negative Employees or Escapees > 99 alters the ending movie?
i.e. do you need to complete the game with exactly 99 escapees or just 0 casualties for the bonus ending?

there are 4 endings: very bad ending, bad ending, good ending, perfect ending.

bad ending: rescued less than 50 mudokons and killed less than 75 mudokons.
very bad ending: rescued less than 50 mudokons and killed 75 or more mudokons.
good ending: rescued 50-98 mudokons.
perfect ending: rescued 99 or more mudokons.

this can be found in the source code of the game if you want to check: https://github.com/AliveTeam/alive_reversing/blob/c1ba4c6c812ac65992d876d68c9e2e3e85636d6f/Source/AliveLibAO/GameEnderController.cpp#L121-L216

About the 4 endings, you're right about the code, but there seems to be only two different final cutscenes in the game files, nor could I find more than 2 on Youtube. I haven't checked this directly by replaying the game, but I gather the only difference between bad/very bad and good/perfect is the message from the devs you get after the final cutscene (for perfect ending the message said I got all secrets, so I guess that would not happen for the merely good ending, and I also got a menu allowing to rewatch cutscenes)

Just saying, it may not be worth replaying the game to see the difference between very bad/bad and good/perfect, you'll probably be disappointed.

people people please, it's been over 20 years since I even looked at the original strategy guide but iirc those three Mudokons in the background get saved by some proxy or previous switch action or whatever you want to call it. Again iirc, there is an electrical barrier that gets disabled by a switch way way way before the escape sequence but, generally when the player switches it, and then switches it again because it does nothing, the barrier gets left closed. This also gets mixed in with game overs, resetting the switch.
