My inventory, if it matters, is
coupon book
secret garden key
coin purse
emerald bracelet
chronograph
moon pendant
master key
shovel
running shoes (traded)
metal detector
silver key
silver spoon
- Locker Room
- Car trunk (with car keys)
- By digging
- Randomly from a trunk
- In Billiards Room
- From Locksmith
- Archive
- Trade House
Also, while I haven't had that happen personally, I strongly believe it should be possible to get it from a Music Room and Great Hall.
Finally, I think it may be possible to get it from these, but I'm only about 60% sure:
- Tool shed
- Closet/Walk-In Closet/Attic
- Guest Bedroom
- some upgrades of the Spare Room.
- Aquarium
What I think happens is that deposit keys have already a relatively low chance to spawn from any of the above, and each specific key's probability is tracked separately, so as you use more of them the chance to get the rest is lower. For an abstract, but easy to follow example, imagine some item source has 10 different possible items to give you, with equal probabilities. If 4 of those are deposit box keys, that's 40% to get a deposit key. Now if you got one and used it, it's permanently removed from the pool, leaving you with 3/9 or 33% chance to get another one next time. Then it lowers to 2/8 (25%), and 1/7 (~14%) for the last one. I can't say for sure that's what happens, but it would track with how a lot of people seem to have harder time getting them the further they go.
If some of my other educated guesses about the game's loot system are correct, to increase your chances of finding it you should get (and keep, without using) as many of the other randomly dropped special keys (silver, prism, secret garden, car keys, keycard) as possible, before trying one of the reliable ways to receive special keys (i.e. Music Room, Locksmith, Locker Room): with most of the possibilities removed from the pool the chance to get what you need grows.
Few notes:
- silver and prism keys are definitely only removed from the pool until used, so if you're hunting for the deposit box key, you should get them and then keep them in your inventory.
- I believe you can't get another Secret Garden key if you already have secret garden in your house, tho I'm not sure if that's still true if you have a Mirror Room.
- I think Lockpick Kit is considered a "special key" for most places where special key can appear with the exception of locksmith, so getting it before rolling Music Room/Locker Room/etc. wouldn't hurt
- Items in Coat Check are still removed from the pool, even if you don't currently have a coat check in your house. I'm not 100% sure if that applies to consumables like Silver/Prism key, but as a rule the game really goes out of its way to prevent you from having multiple copies of the same special item, so it probably does apply to them too.
- I found one special key every time I completely opened a Locker Room, but it's possible that it's not a 100% guaranteed spawn, so Music Room and Locksmith are probably slightly more reliable.
- Trades in the Trade House are random, but I think they're only rolled once per item per run at most (with an exception I'll get to in a moment), so if you e.g. get a Silver Key, see that it trades for a Coupon Book, get rid of the silver key and then find another one, the new one would still be traded for a Coupon Book (as a consequence of this there sometimes are infinite loops of trades, where A trades for B and B trades for A). The exception I alluded to is that the game won't let you have multiple copies of an item, so if you see that something trades for a Coupon Book, and then get Coupon Book somewhere else (or even from a different trade), it would reroll that trade. Trading is still pretty unreliable as a way to get a deposit box key, cause there's always an option for a trade for ivory dice to be offered, which for obvious reasons you can't force a reroll on.
- I don't think the presence of a Vault changes the probability of finding a deposit box key (hell, most of the times I found it were before I even seen a Vault offered for the first time), but getting one early, if offered, probably wouldn't hurt, if only because then you at least can be sure you can use the key if you do find it on that run.
- Everything above is based purely on anecdotal experience and experimentation (mine and players I talked to), and general knowledge of how item RNG tends to be implemented in other games, so don't take it as a gospel (except the first list, cause those are places where I definitely personally remember finding it). I did try to distinguish things I'm fairly sure of from what I think is true but not completely confident in
Mind I dug up 32 dirt piles that day (mmm... spread dirt upon drafting bedrooms + tinker blessing... (this is extra funny when you have the Conference Room))
You can definitely get key 370 out of order of the other keys.
I just got my last key, last night.
370 was my third key. 304 was my last.
It's also possible I ran into other numbers at other times than when I was able to use them, but the lowest number one got Coat Check'd until I finally drew the required room (and Coat Check). 2nd lowest the same, but took less time (on the order of 3 days instead of 20). Third and fourth were both "oh, I know where this goes" and already had the relevant room drafted.
I'm still hunting for that key. Some places not already listed where I found the other vault keys:
* Conference Room
* Sauna
* Wine Cellar
* and I can confirm they appear in the Walk-In Closet and Attic
I don't think I've ever seen a major key in the Great Hall - just regular keys, coins, and gems. Maybe I've just been unlucky with the Great Hall.
I believe most places that can spawn regular keys can also generate vault keys.
You mean walk in closet or attic? There is no walk in attic.
Here's some more places you can find vault keys that I've found, and there seem to only be 4 keys, confirmed by multiple people who have reached endgame.
- Office
- Morning Room
- Her Ladyships Chambers
- Like the poster above, I think I also got one in Guest bedroom but not 100% sure.
Tips for hunting them down:
- As stated, Trading post has them sometimes, in exchange for rarer items like special keys, workshop crafted items etc. If a key doesn't appear after you've tried a few of these trades, it won't. When they are available it's there for multiple trades so don't waste time scouring the whole house for more stuff to trade just in case.
- Lucky Rabbit's Foot item, if you can find it, is your friend. It is another rare item that can spawn, I've most often seen it in Walk-in Closet and Attic. It increases the chance of finding rare items. If you have the Rabbits Foot but don't find a vault key, if you can, put the Foot in the Coat Check and try to draft Coat Check early another day so you can get your Foot out and increase your odds for the whole rest of the draft.
- Try and draft Coat Check or Vault early in case you come across vault keys in your travels. I know Vault is expensive though so Coat Check is usually a better bet as insurance where you can dump a vault key if you don't have vault available.
- A nice tip to guarantee Trading Post (or any other outer room), is to not draft the outer room straight away. Instead get two dice first from the house (upgraded Boudoir is good for this), or draft Study and have 2 gems on hand. Now you can re-roll at the outside room and guarantee getting Trader. As the drafting pool is only small for the outer rooms, 2 dice lets you cycle through all the possibilities with the default rooms available.
- Be patient, and don't base runs just on getting vault keys or you'll go mad. Just try to set up the conditions to take advantage of them and then go about your run as normal.
- Good luck, and don't be like me and write down a key number wrong and then spend hours and hours trying to find a 5th mystery key that doesn't exist (at least I don't think it does...)
