I like the guides this site does for the game, as they give four hints before presenting the solution in a spoiler should you wish to skip to it.

I had solved that. And someone pointed out how it's extra relevant to this puzzle. As soon as they brought it up again it clicked for me, but standing there in the room staring closely at the calendar with my magnifying glass it didn't click.
I'm actually glad I didn't try just counting the gates. Since then I would have thought it was arbitrary and likely never would have understood the double meaning to the painting message
I actually think it's one of the better safe codes. The puzzle just suffers a bit from it not being obvious how important the paired painting message will be as you go to solve these puzzles.
related to understanding how you'd know:
did you read the note in the freezer? it pretty clearly states that the message will be related to the safes. it also clearly states the message has many double entendres and meanings, and that you shouldn't bother looking for the dates directly (like it says the dates are not just written out plainly)
as per above, might have missed the note that says its v important lol
That clue is for a different safe.
3 different interpretations of "count small gates" are clues for 3 different safes, so technically it's the correct clue
Ahh, thought it was 2. I stand corrected.
the marked day is not actually the important part of that calendar, based on the painting puzzle clue
well the "message" has a very clear meaning, and needing a vague hint in a hard-to-access location at a possible "alternative" interpretation is total garbage. anyway, i think they realized it themselves and made it easily brueforceable. in fact, since all potential dates are easily breteforceable it wouldn't make sense to make hints for any of them too obtuse, as the moment it stops being obvious people will just bf it (and will likely save a lot of time).
You are playing the wrong game if that is how you want to respond to puzzles.
You are going to find yourself in a world of hurt later if you keep on this path.
