Do the swim trunks do anything?

this seems to be false? I've seen the trunks in the water way before I ever bought the swimming trunks. I remember because when I finally got to the gift shop I saw the swimming trunks and assumed they'd let me enter the water without having to drain the pool to get to the trunks.

I don't want to just be dismissive, but I would suspect you are misremembering the chests being there before purchasing the trunks, Acherow. I started a new profile not long ago to change some of the upgrade choices I'd made, and the moment I bought the swim trunks the chests started appearing.

I understand that by all logic the order of it makes sense, what with the pun- unlocking a pair of trunks and all. Perhaps I might've been victim to a bug of some sort? But I absolutely swear I've seen the trunks in the pool before ever buying the swim trunks. I wouldn't have had the false lead of the idea of using the swimming trunks to get in the water if it wasn't the case. I bought the swimming trunks very recently by smashing the chapel piggy bank and I'm absolutely certain I never had the funds for it beforehand.
