There is a cheat mode to find the letters. Although it's tricky. If you manage to draft the Workshop, it will literally just tell you the missing letter of that room. If you look on the workbench opposite the contraption maker, you will see a stone slab with a chisel next to it. And on that stone slab is the letter.
"Create" really feels like a stretch for that picture lol, but it makes sense
From what people have been saying I think the image combos can appear in different locations in different games, for example my Spine/Pine appear in a different place from the one mentioned but it still represents the same letter, eg a different S in the answer
Create/Crate was one of the last ones I figured out (with help!)
The stalk of grass and match was the other one that just confounded me for a while and it turned out my guess was right (paired with the Create/Crate and derping on the letter left me with a pair that made no sense).
Solved the whole letters part of the puzzle and have a clue that is useless (I already figured out the last four lines myself, thanks, now I just need to find three of the remaining safes and figure out which of the sixteen or so dates the game has in it goes to which one).

completed message:
IF WE COUNT SMALL GATES EIGHT DATES CRACK EIGHT SAFES
The worst part about all this work is that the "clue" you get from this is a bad clue, very misleading.
wtf does it mean "small gates"? shouldn't the saying go "small gains" the finished message confuses me so much
It's very much intentional what it says.
For more total info.
If you count small locked gates as a safe, there is 8 "safes" that you can unlock.
All of said safe codes follow viable date formatting, be in MM/DD or DD/MM. So one "month" digit and one "day" digit. So for example, 06-21 or 21-06. ALL of said gates/safes are date-locked. That being your main/only hint to solve some of them.
Furthermore
Some of the safe codes can be found out by counting "small gates" to find said date formatted safe codes.
Notably, for basically every single safe, if you know these rules, you can solve the safe with info only within the room. For the gates, one gate needs info found elsewhere, and the other is solvable by figuring out the only possible valid solution that obeys the rule. Info found elsewhere can help you solve some of said puzzles easier, but they are technically solvable purely with info found in the room if you know the painting hint.
absolutely not misleading at all.
the most obvious one reveals the format pattern.
all except one have clues about what to enter, using that pattern.
one of them you have to solve with no clue except what fits pattern.
and the hardest one has the logic for the solution not in the room at all, but it is solvable via brute force as the data you have to parse is in the room and there aren't that many options.
