Is this supposed to be fun?
I feel no sense of accomplishment doing any of the stuff I've been doing. Just feels like spending time.

I don't think I've ever been more confused by the overwhelmingly positive critical reception a game has received at launch. It just makes zero sense to me. It's mid.

Yeah this might be the biggest discrepancy between professional critics and the public that I've ever seen regarding a release also,

The more I think about it the more I guess it comes down to who these audiences are and how they approached the game. People like Jason Schreier (who's quote about it being his favourite game of all time that probably put more eyes on this game in the first place) can likely afford to sit down and play this thing for 8 hours a day making incremental progress because that's their *job*. The rest of us normies with regular 9-5 workdays who maybe get an hour or two before bed are going to get much more bored and frustrated at making zero progress over and over again due to bad RNG - and subsequently feel like our time is being wasted more since we have less of it.

Likewise, he mentioned in one of his podcasts how all of the game industry people and critics that were playing it early are part of a discord in which they were sharing notes, talking about certain puzzles, and generally working through the game together. On the other hand look at this forum (Heck look at this thread itself) - a lot of people here are just toxic and unsympathetic to people struggling, are completely unwilling to lend a hand, and would instead mock others for being 'too dumb' rather than help as a community effort.
By contrast it stands to reason why the individuals playing on their own who are struggling to make any progression are going to fall off of this and possibly refund.

I saw another thread here suggesting the ability to rotate map tiles when drawing, the amount of hate thrown at them for just suggesting a mode to make the game more approachable and fun for people who don't really like having hours of their life wasted by RNG was crazy levels of gatekeeping.

Ultimately In the end I just looked up a youtube video detailing the route and showing the final door being opened. Yeah I don't think I would have figured half of that out anytime soon, let alone had the patience for RNGeesus to bless me with just the right map tiles and keys.. :/
Having more options to permanently keep resources or rotate tiles would have probably kept me engaged, but RNG just constantly stopping entire runs is the antithesis of fun for me.
April's backlog and release schedule is way too packed to spend 20-30 hours on constant dead ends and locked doors anyway from where I'm sitting, maybe if it were a quieter month with no other releases I would have had more patience. :steamsad:

If you get an endorphin hit from solving puzzles in games, you'll probably like this game. If you like the board game-like strategy of placing down tiles in just the right way to line up entrances and gain useful items, you'll probably like this game. If you like walking simulators and emergent stories you'll probably like this game. If you like a bunch of that, it's probably going to be a big, addictive hit for you (like me). If none of that appeals to you...it's probably not the game for you.
The annoying thing is that I love all of that stuff, the game is so Betrayal at House on the Hill coded at a glance! I guess the difference is we never had to just reshuffle all the cards and restart the entire game 30 times over until we got something *Perfect* because of bad RNG in those... :enemy:

I think people heard 'roguelite' and thought of all the other super popular roguelites, like Hades...

But roguelite doesn't have to mean action. There's even a roguelite colony builder. (Like a Rimworld thing.)

Yup and those said people are filling up the internet with moaning and complaining because the concept is lost on them.

This game is UTTERLY fascinating.

shot, chaser

[Several paragraphs of very polite, well-meaning, and intelligent criticism]

[two sentences of thinly-veiled insult]

yeah, that's the mood, alright.

same
2 hour game stretched out 8x longer with a frustrating rng mechanic.
Very little skill involved in making progress
Just spam run to discover new rooms and pray something new happens this time

The whole point of making a game a roguelike is to pad the play time and fool you into thinking that it's a big game when it's just a couple of hours stretched into oblivion with pointless RNG grinding.

Played this on Gamepass for 6-7 hours so far. It has everything that I'd normally like in a game, but I have to agree with a lot of you that the RNG ruins the experience for me.

I really want to enjoy it, but I don't remember a game that was more disrespectful of my free time than Blue Prince is. Maybe "wasting time" is part of the meta / narrative, but at this point I think I'm done with it and I don't really care anymore.

My takeaway from this entire thread is happiness knowing that Deltarune will not be burdened from having the most annoying game fans this year.

Spending time is exactly why people are enjoying the game but they won't admit it. It's just an idle game masquerading as a puzzle mystery game.

Remember just because you struggle with this and don't find it interesting and fun doesn't mean other people feel the same.
The main goal for this game I think is actually learning the backstory and history of this world and the events leading up to the game.
So if lore is not your thing, then this definitely won't be interesting as actually reaching Room 46 is not end. While you can stop playing over you've done that, you're missing out on the real story

Yeah, I would abolutely agree that the game is about uncovering the history of the place and what happened there. The tyle laying is the hook, the puzzles are the conflict, and the lore is the resolution.

The problem is RNG coming along and tearing pages out of the book to stop you from reading.

All I see in this thread are 2 type of people. Those with short attention spans who need answers now and can't think very long or very deep, and those with long attention spans, willing to take the time and enjoy the adventure, puzzles, lore, and fun in this gem of a game.

But I guess if you beg loud enough, and hard enough, maybe the Devs will take pity on you, and add in a 'Easy Mode' for you that gives all the answers as soon as you find each puzzle, to help shorten the game for you.

I don't think people are taking issue with the puzzles. They're taking issue with the RNG.

Which is understandable. It gets worse the more you play.

and all I see in your post is generic toxic gatekeeping and ignorance towards people with differing opinions and views.

the game felt too simple, as soon as i started to write stuff down i found that it was useless because i needed zero notes, basic logic does not make a puzzle game amazing
There are levels of puzzles to this game. You are on the first level... You absolutely need notes to start figuring out the hidden stuff.

Sure, i have completed La Mulanas, Void stranger, Witness and other MUCH harder puzle games than this, but my attention span in short. Please stop talking from a high horse.

Funs relative. Do you have fun mid way through a poker tournament? Do you have fun in a Balatro run. No it's not about fun. Fulfillment is what these games are about.
