Question about Room 46 (Spoilers)
Ok, so I got to Room 46 today. Loved the cutscene.

But it gave me a key and said the next thing I have to do is "go below." I was thinking oh okay, basement time. But I tried going there next run and the key isn't in my inventory anymore. Do I have to reach Room 46 all over again? Or is the key just there for the taking somewhere and I can't figure out where it was left? I have a hard time keeping track of which things are permanently upgraded/opened and which ones I have to redo every day.

And please, if you could answer my question with a minimum of spoilers I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

You don't take any inventory with you into the next day.

Cost check is highly useful.

Are you sure you are talking about Room 46 and not the Antechamber (which is a room inside a 9 by 5 grid and thus one of the 45 regular rooms despite its special doors)?

About the key you receive in the Antechamber, we can say the following:
- As with all items, it will not stay in your inventory when you call it a day
- As with all items, you can check it into the Coat Check and fetch it from there later (which is a perfectly valid option to continue your search for Room 46 the other day)
- Once you actually used the key, the door that you opened with it will permanently stay open, even it might not look so
- Your idea about where you could apply the key is definitely worth a try
- There are methods to reach Room 46 without using the Antechamber key, but they are more difficult in the early game and require more luck
- If you want to try a method that does require the Antechamber key, you still have quite some things left to do once you collected the key

I think they are talking about the sanctum key (because they mentioned loving a cutscene. I intitially thought basement key too because of the "go below").

Edit: apparently I'm incorrect. They got to the antechamber in a very unusual way and are wondering about the basement key

Thank you all, this is helpful. I was indeed talking about the antechamber. I suppose most people reach the antechamber without also having the north door unlocked the first time they get there, and maybe that's why they get that key and are meant to use it for something. In my case, the first time I reached the antechamber I already did have the north unlocked, so I just marched right in and got my ending.

That is definitely irregular, congrats.

I was in the same boat; however I had previously seen the door the key is meant for so I ran to where it was before going through 46.

So wait. How did you guys unlock the north antechamber door? Did you even use the basement? if so how did you get in?

I still haven't been to the basement, at least as far as I know. The way to the north door lever was through a secret passageway I found. If you're not familiar with it then maybe I shouldn't spoil it for you?

I've basically done everything in the game as far as I know. You wouldn't be spoiling anything for me.
It would just be interesting to understand which path you took, as it is quite an unusual one in my experience.

A secret passage doesnt really narrow it down. I can think of 3 ways that fit that description.
But none of them should work on their own, unless you also used the pump room at some point.

Regarding whether you've been through the basement:
Did you at any point have to move carts with boxes so you could climb over them?

Doors opened with the BASEMENT key stay unlocked iirc.

It sounds like they havent unlocked any of those doors yet. They reached the antechamber with the north door already opened before they even had access to the antechamber, thus havent used the basement key even once.

Oh ok.

(Tidus voice) Listen to my story.
I had the tomb unlocked and solved the puzzle down there (from the stained glass windows in the chapel). That opened a passageway that led to the reservoir. I took note of the fact that there was a boat that was JUST slightly submerged in water. I tried draining the whole reservoir and that didn't help, so instead I filled it up just a notch below full, and lo and behold, that let me ride the boat across. On the other side I explored a bit and found the room with the north lever.

As a cool added thing, I went to the reservoir right at the start of my next run, and that put me 10 steps behind schedule and I thought "oh what the heck, I might as well try doing a normal run now instead of ending the day." So I embarked on a run, and lo and behold, that's the one where the stars finally aligned for me and I was able to get the secret garden, unlock the antechamber, and go in for the first time. Goosebumps! Got that cool pedestal with the key on it and thought "oh cool, I guess this is something I'll need?" and just proceeded right into Room 46. Not realizing the key was actually supposed to be used for something else. At that point I was pretty low on steps anyways.

So yes, haven't been to the basement yet, unless the area beneath the tomb counts as the basement. I know of two entrances (bottom of the fountain and bottom of the foundation), but have never used the key to unlock them.
Thank you.
That's what I figured you did :D
