Why does entering room 46 end the run?!?!?
I had stuff i still wanted to do. I finally got the power hammer, but now I'll have to go through the slog of getting it again just to use it. ♥♥♥♥ this

Because it's the primary initial goal of the game. Getting there for the first time is special. Getting there on subsequent runs won't end the day, though.

This was absolutely awful, why not have a point of no return message before opening. I had all the chess pieces after 25 days of trying this bombed a perfect run and tanked my motivation honestly
It was an interesting stylistic choice... it also partially obscures the fact that it is worth going to it a second time. I know for me when I first got it, I assumed I would get a cut-scene doing it again. I was surprised when that wasn't the case.

I do agree, I wish it wasn't exactly like this. All that it had to do was return you to your day after the cut-scene and credits (is my opinion), but I hope it doesn't kill your motivation. The post Room 46 content is excellent and is the part I actually fell in love with.

I imagine that Simon was so thrilled when he got there, that he ran straight back to the lawyer, only for them to ask him for proof, and then Simon was all like "oh ****".
I mean what are you doing going in there, when you aren't done with your run?

Your goal is to clearly get to room 46, CLEARLY this ends the run.
The win condition for the game, the objective and goal is to get to Room 46. Thats your point of no return, the win condition, the thing that will make you accomplish your goal.

That doesn't really explain why the run ends, though. The game could instead have shown the credits and then, after the credits, continued the game with you in Room 46 at that point.

Honestly I'm not sure why the day ends the first time you reach the room. I think I lost an Upgrade disk opportunity because of it if I remember right. 😪

Because Simon needs time to sleep on what he saw. It shook him to his core. Didn't you listen to the cutscene?

Yeah, I love that cutscene, it's pretty great. 👍 He doesn't look very "shook" in it though, more curious than anything else.
Even worse, for me and a friend of mine, our Room 46 day was the FIRST time we reached the antechamber successfully because of RNG. So we picked up the Basement Key and had enough steps/knowledge to use it, but we figured we should "at least try the door" just in case. So now we have to get a run that good, AGAIN, just to Unlock the Basement.

This oversight is so huge (THE DOOR TO ROOM 46 HAS A FREAKING KEYHOLE, IMPLYING IT COULD ALSO BE LOCKED) that it actually took both of us out of the ending, myself almost entirely.

How the hell did you get to Room 46 before unlocking The Basement?

There are 2 options: 1st is probably not that much of a spoiler for you. The second might be a preatty heavy spoiler... so I opbfuscated/skipped some parts.
1: They found the pump room and lowered the reservoir by one. Then they entered the tomb and found the secret passage to the underground, moved the minecart then took the boat over to the other side and did the rotating gear puzzle like normal.

2: They never went underground, instead they connected a powersource to the laboratory and solved the periodic table puzzle. Then after unlocking the grotto they did some more things before they found the floorplan with the backup north lever.
At the very least, either the ending or the letter should leave a strong indication you should return to room 46. Right now, it doesn't leave such indication at all.

Or, ideally, it just shouldn't end the run.

Not entirely possible.

1. Is correct and one of the like four main ways to potentially do the One Day trophy.
For 2. The Throne Room can't be drafted the day it is added to the pool. My guess is this was to prevent it from being the 'preferred' way to do the Day One challenge

But, for other ways to do the lever without the Foundation/Basement Key

3. Power Hammer/Tomb - when you come in the back, you bypass that side's door, still requires the Tomb
4. Being spoiled on Satellites - You can run the experiment to unlock Antechamber doors on day one, if I remember correctly. This definitely involves a lot of pre-knowledge

They didnt say they did it in day 1. they could have gotten the floorplan on day 42 and gotten to room 46 on day 57... or whatever. Strangely familiar never gave us any day, they only said first TIME.

But yeah, i forgot about the extended lab experiment.

For the sake of this discussion though (considering who is asking) I think 3. might count as unlocking basement, just not with the key.
