Why is the Rotunda not a Mechanical room?
It has giant gears and a button that when pressed does stuff.

Yet it isn't mechanical but the Security Room is?
Security's only notable features are the computer--but that's not enough for the Office to be mechanical--and the steam ducts--but that's not enough for the Archives or Weight room to be mechanical.

I think it’s because the mechanical rooms are meant to be reserved for things that affect other rooms or aspects of the house. While also being effects you are choosing per run.
Security lets you change RNG with locked doors, Boiler lets you power other rooms, Utility Closet affects locks and debuffs of certain red rooms, etc.

Rotunda doesn’t count because it only really affects itself. It’s essentially just a 4-door room.

Good point.

This is from Drafting Strategy vol. 2 on Mechanical Rooms:
"These rooms serve as the command centers for estate operations, housing the control systems that keep everything running smoothly."
I would actually argue that Furnace should be a “mechanical room” because it affects the Freezer, but I guess they wanted to hide that functionality. Or I guess just being a red room overwrites that?

There's an argument to be had for that room, but the combination of it being red and it being entirely passive I think means it doesn't quite make the cut.

they reveal that functionality through the electronic mail.

The counterargument is that the Furnace's "function" isn't actually a normal active operation someone taking care of the house would use it for. Unless I'm overlooking something all the gear rooms have functions that thematically actually makes sense for a caretaker to do.

🤔 Hmm. Aside from the Mechanarium (which is obviously there to provide synergy) you're right. There all places that staff would be working, or infrastructure related.

The only exception is the upgraded aquarium. But the upgraded aquarium is also the only way you can get 8 mechanical rooms in your house (there are 6, plus the Mechanarium, making the eel aquarium a required upgrade without having the Chamber of Mirrors).
I actually think the Rotunda IS a mechnical room it just isn't listed.

The reason i believe this that the Electromagnet reacts when a mechanical room appears in the draw pool. After drafting all of them but Rotunda, it kept reacting whenever Rotunda would appear. It would not trigger on any other room.

Interesting.
But does the Mechanarium count it?

I got my key in 7, so I couldn't tell you.
mechanarium has to be mechanical, so it has at least one door to enter (otherwise you could draft it with 0 doors XD )

and you don't need a total of 8 mechanical rooms because drafting it against internal walls (rooms with no door towards the drafting location) means it won't waste a door there: e.g. if you place it beside two pre-drafted rooms you can get all the diagonal doors with only 6 total mechanical).

So putting it in the corner is best then?

I don't think it drafts on an outer edge since it's still classed as a 4-door but yes
