Within the game itself? Not really, it's a game you learn by playing. The house is initially mysterious to you, so I think it's deliberate that many things are not explained but need to be discovered, as if you were 14-year-old Simon. However, throughout the house you will find notes that guide you. For example, in the Entrance Hall you should find a welcome letter from your great uncle, and a note on 'Exhausting' about what the steps symbol represents.

The game does tell you that you might want a (paper) notebook to keep notes in (although I'm primarily doing it through screenshots and I've started having to add extra notes to some).
