Here's the thing, and the main reason you need to keep going late into every run: Commonplace rooms are weeds, and that's by design. Those rooms are designed to give you the resources you need to open all the locked doors and do all the RNG manipulation you need later. Those rooms appear ALL THE TIME in drafts and will continue to do so until you pick them, so if you want two not commonplace rooms to kiss, you do that by weeding all the commonplace rooms out first.
Because of that, it's never a lost cause until you've literally filled out the house and can't make the combo anymore. You're the most likely to create the combo during the last couple of drafts.
The longer you go, the more chances you have of having a good amount of rerolls available (Study+plenty of gems is amazing), the more rolls you get.
So the longer you go, the better your chances overall provided you prepare properly. I almost never end a day unless I am forced to, either through lack of steps, lack of keys/keycard access, or lack of available doors to open.
