Standing in the distiller is finicky?
I emptied the water can but am not getting any prompts to refill it no matter where I stand. Any advice?

Point at the water itself, and you should be able to fill the can
Stand directly in front of the vat (the water should be visible) and wait a few seconds, there is a small delay.
I guess they had to make it a bit finicky so people wouldn't discover it accidentally.

they must be really proud of that "puzzle"

I've found the Distillery quite recently and just want to make sure of something :

The vats appeared to be empty for me. Is that expected? Where would one start looking to find a way to bring it back into working order?

I think I'm still quite far from having a use for it, so no need to be too precise with the clues, but seeing people talk about it has brought it back to mind and now I'm curious.

As far as I know, there is nothing that needs to be done, just come in with the correct item and there should be water. But maybe I just got lucky and did something accidentally?

I think you did get lucky. This morning was my third attempt and I couldn't get the prompt to appear. FWIW, my vat appears empty too.

I was so curious about it I looked up a video guide just to watch the few seconds that show the player filling the item with the water.

Turns out you basically have to shimmy yourself between the apparently empty vat and the smaller metal cannister that sits on the ground left of it, which will let you see the water at the bottom of the vat and should bring up the prompt.

Here's a link to the video. The link will have you start at the relevant bit (4:10). The Relevant bit lasts from 4:10 to 4:25. You can see where they stand to fill up the thing.

Obviously don't watch after that, as there very well might be spoilers after that part!
The distillery vat is empty for me too, there's no water. I come in with an empty watering can but I can't refill it.

EDIT: Never mind, I apparently need to open a specific lockbox in the vault.

Do you know which one? Because my vat is always empty and I have no idea what to do about it.
