[strategy] How do we feel about the compass?

I've been offered a compass as early as Rank 1. I feel that might be too early to take this item. I'd rather stay on the lowest ranks for as long as possible to farm keys and gems.

Do you ever find yourself deliberately not picking up the compass?

On a side note, I wish there was a mechanism to drop certain items freely. I know the coat check is a thing, but at the same time I'd rather not because I'd rather not see the compass the next day.
