Softlock in Underground?
I previously raised the level of the cog mechanism in the underground. However, I think this means I have no way of getting back to the platform that lets you change the level? Is there a way to do so that I'm missing?

You are right, it can lock you out from one room. This isn't what a word "softlocked" means though

It's easy to forget that the foreman's office is both locked from one side and necessary to get to the appropriate place. I did.

I suspect the easiest solution for the devs is going to be to always set the cog in the lowered position on game start.

Oh I would hate that. Having to do that puzzle every time just to get to the other side would annoy me. I think they would just need a button to press to manually reset it to "Default" position.
I think the easiest solution here is to put a lowering lever on the upper level, behind the red door, at the platform with the window overlooking the resevoir. You'd have to end the day there to lower it and you'd have to have solved the entire puzzle first to use it, so there's no other benefit. And after fixing your softlock you can still keep the bridge in its raised position the rest of the time.

True, but then imagine a player who is not at all familiar with the issue present in this thread, who hasn't softlocked themselves out of the Foreman's office. They will come across this second raise/lower switch and likely assume that the cog puzzle is not over yet. They would have no idea that it is only there as a fail-safe. It would lead to a lot of people being confused and cause them to waste time wondering how the second switch comes into play.

In a mystery game filled with so many red herrings already, what's the addition of one more?

Adding buttons is relatively hard. Setting a state on day start/end is relatively easy. The raised state is only necessary for 2 things I know of, and one of them is the room this locks you out of.

Red herrings aren't the same as pointless leads. The game has tonnes of clues that seem to suggest one thing, but actually mean another when you gain more knowledge. Every red herring is still a clue in a grander mystery. This hypothetical secondary switch is part of no mystery. It would be in conflict with everything else in the game and unfairly mislead players.

This happened to me.

Did I ruin my chances for fully completing the game and seeing all the content?

If so that's sad :(
Fixed in patch 1.03.

Seems the gear will start in the lowered(default) position each day.
That's a pretty frustrating way to fix this. Once you open the shortcut back from the foreman's office, the puzzle resetting means a couple minutes wasted every time you want to get to the upper level.

Seems the patch also broke the boiler room puzzle somehow. Today post-patch the red door was closed for me, even though I hadn't touched the puzzle since first entering the door.

As feared, they picked the fix that would generate the most tedium.
A better fix IMHO would have been to make it so that the gear auto-lowers at the end of the day only if the mining office isn't open.

You need the boiler room in your house for the red door to be open. (Also AFAIK there's not much reason to want to go to the top layer more than once, unless you _really_ want that gem)
