The Kennels

So, either i'm missing something or maybe i'm doing something incorrect.

So, I placed the kennels "After you dig in a room for the first time, the doors become unlocked." So I assume, I dig a hole, the doors are unlocked.

I'm in the foundation room, I dig three holes, two doors are still locked. Does this mean, you can only dig one hole and then unlock the doors or does this mean the rooms have to be within X amount of squares of the kennels in order to work? (And did I miss this in a hint somewhere else in the game, otherwise not directly explaining this.)

Or does this mean this only works for specific rooms?

For me, kennel and digging has never opened doors in Foundation. I don't know why. In all other rooms kennel + digging seems to open the doors.
