I do not understand hops
I read the entry of the brewpedia on hops, and I understand this much: putting hops in early gives the brew more bitterness, while putting them in later gives more of the flavors of the used hops.

I've been experimenting, not following any recipes, and I'm getting weird results that I don't understand: for example, for one test that I did I started with 5 grams of marauder for 50 minutes, then 40 grams (I did 2 x 20, does that matter?) of troeh for an additional 10 minutes, and finally removed everything.

But then when I got the results, for the flavor notes I got pine: 0, resin: 0 and grapefruit: 0, and 0 IBU for the bitterness (none of the other ingredients added flavor notes).

I have no idea why this is happening. Could this be caused by other steps/ingredients, or are the hops the only factor?

what kind of cooler are you using?

What is strange is that you didn't get any bitternes. But for flavour and aroma, those 10-15 minutes should be at the end of boiling and you should chill the wort down immediately to keep the taste. If you really want taste and if the game allows it, you could also add 70-200 grams of hops to the fermenter for 3-4 days (dry hopping). This should be added after the most active period of fermentation is complete ~3 days.

Yeah as soon as the last 10 minutes are done I start cooling it off. It's possible that my timing is off a bit, I don't think I do exactly 50 minutes then 10 minutes, I'll try to be more precise. I'll try the dry hopping, see if that changes anything. I guess the 0 bitterness could be a bug?

No, this is correct, unless the recipe specifically says otherwise.

That seems to have fixed it! And it also fixed the flavor notes as well! Thank you, I was starting to go crazy trying to figure out what was wrong

And what goes for the recipes you are experimenting with. The irl amature rule is 60min boil divided. how ever you want and with grams you want.

as example: Irl i do a reciep on 5 hop times. 50-30-15-5min and then a dry hop in mash-tun for 14days. gets a perfect amarillo ipa.
(the dry hop dont work in game i think. havent tried that reciep yet thu!?)

No, that is most definitely not correct. Boil the first addition for 50 minutes, then add the second charge and boil for 10 more minutes.

Boil times for the wort are usually 60 minutes. This can vary for a number of reasons, but the game is expecting a 60 minute boil time. That said, the way I usually see recipes written (and the way I write them), is to notate the time remaining at which you add the hops (in addition to the alpha acid units of your batch of hops). For example, my last DIPA used this schedule:

60 minutes: 28 g Mosaic (11.6% AAU)
10 Minutes: 20 g Mosaic (11.6% AAU)
Hopstand @ 65C for 30 minutes: 56 g Mosaic (11.6% AAU)
Day 2, dry hop: 56 g Mosaic (11.6% AAU)

But the chillers are bugged too.

okay thats good to know. Never had a issue with my brews they come out near perfect with the 50min total instead of 60. ill give 60 a go though
