Do note however that I only played solo.
I did really enjoyed the atmosphere of the game, and I found the game to be more interesting than Little Hope and Man of Medan. The secrets nicely build up the situation in the game, and the new gameplay features make secret hunt a bit more "rewarding" (even if the inventory system is a bit lackuster).
I think I'd still rate House of Ashes higher, but I prefered TDIM more than Little Hope and Man of Medan.
BUGS ASIDE (because yeah I've encountered so many, and few game breaking ones) the story is confusing, exploration is decent but i hate when its on a hidden timer... take too much time exploring and the game Jumps cuts you into an action scene that makes no sense (ie: im in a garden, exploring every corners because you need to find these collectable coins to buy stuff in the after game, so I'm taking my time exploring every bits... obviously there's 2 Points of interest in the garden, a bunch of statues, and a garden house... now i know in my guts, something important to the story is at either POIs, after taking my time around in the garden, i enter the garden house, first thing i see on the wall is a collectible item, as i approach it.... TOO LATE I'm suddenly in the statues area and the killer found me and now i have to run away... UGH THIS HAPPENS SO OFTEN... Makes NO SENSE I was in the Garden house, why do i WARP in the statues area???)
All the characters are very generic... in each other opus each characters are very distinct, you always have someone you love and hope will end with, and one you hate ytou hope wiull die something horrible (lol) but no this one everyone is generic, no personality beside being lesbian, being a strict leader, being... i dunno "the new girl" and being "the dude who's afraid of heights"... thats all their personalities will be explored...
Usually every games of the series has a bunch of twists in the story... OMG they were Wendigoes, OMG the bad guys were the good guys, OMG ALIENS, in this story... nope ZERO twists in the story... plays out like a boring thriller, a boring "slasher" movie with Zero excitement... i was so bored from the start screen to the credits.
Lastly, the game serie is known for its horror, jump scares, tense moments... forget all about this in this game, there's VERY few jump scares total, you can count them on one hand that is missing a few fingers, the only tense moment in the game is "OMG DID THE DOG DIED?" ugh...
Dull experience, lacking everything the other games in the serie had, BUT the post credit scene giving us a teaser of their next game sure does look amazing tho... but we'll talk about this one next year when it comes out... i hope...
Sadly it’s woke so there is only a gay romance
I personally enjoy history, so found the backdrop of this being related to HH. Holmes intriguing. The story overall makes sense to me because it is what it is-a killer inviting groups of victims to his hotel to kill them and you get to attempt to survive that. I also didn't mind the search and explore puzzle aspects because I grew up with and enjoy games like that where I can do so. I was not expecting this to be anything but that.
I did feel that the story initially dragged out a bit, but I chalked it up to one, learning the game, and two, how a bunch of future victims slowly start exploring an area and for it to rapidly progress from there, which it did eventually. Like someone else said, it got to a point where things would time out and progress, which surprised me at first, but made sense that if a killer is hunting you, you will not have all the time in the world to look around.
Figuring out who the killer really was, in my opinion, just a little side bit that was not actually important to progress or win the game. Truth be told, I had it figured out correctly just from watching streamers playing the demo of it. The main purpose of the game is to try and get the whole crew out alive and not who is the killer.
This game has solid writing, good character development, good suspense and atmosphere, new game mechanics like items for puzzles are incorporated well and the saw like survival aspect of deathly traps works well the mystery of who the killer is and what is his motivation and his methods is also interesting.
I loved House Of Ashes the most by far since it was awesome in both story department and action scenes and had The Descent like atmosphere which I love also Salim and Jason was such a legendary combo of survivors but I think this game is second best in the series.
