lost old game
While loading in I accidentally hit the new game button...it seems to have overwritten my ongoing game and I cant find it in the save files. Since there is only one save file whats the point of having a save file? Not even a prompt to ask if you really want to start a new game and that you will lose the old? Can my old game be recovered? If not then Im done with this game.

The game automatically creates backup copies. Here is a video on how to restore it.

thanks...ill try that

tried it multiple times but no luck. I think that the trick he shows only works for restoring your current game to an earlier save, which for me is now the new game. I've even deleted out the new game save files and backups completely, and it still sends me back to a new game...120 hrs down the tubes

Thats not possible.
Here are Steps to use your backup.
1.) go to \AppData\Local\U01\Saved\SaveBackup\"Bunch of numbers here" (easy way to get to appdata is typing in explorer %appdata%)
2.) after you are in the folder where is steam_autocloud.vdf you should see maybe 2 folders, get into the older one.
3.) Search for the newest file you find and copy it. ( Right click, Copy )
4.) go to \AppData\Local\U01\Saved\SaveGames\"Bunch of numbers here"
5.) go into the folder where GameSaveData.sav is.
5.) copy your backup file into this folder, rename GameSaveData.sav into GameSaveData_Back.sav and then change your backup into GameSaveData.sav.

In case you dont see the file type (.sav/.bak etc.) in the explorer you have at the top "VIEW", click it and then activate File name extensions.

afterwards start the game and your old game should be good to go again.

if you cant seem to do it, i can help you over discord or anydesk.

ok...so thats what I have been doing, though I tried it again following your instructions with the same results. When I go to \AppData\Local\U01\Saved\SaveGames\"Bunch of numbers here" there are 2 files with "bunch of numbers" both with GameSaveData. one is obviously the new game as it doesnt have the create outpost file, etc. I've tried putting my old save file in both to no avail. I've even tried to delete the newer "bunch of numbers" file there, but it just comes back when the game starts as it starts a new game...I'm stumped. perhaps discord is the way...i would love to get this back...thanks for your help so far and in the future!

Why do people do all these things? You can, literaly, just select your old save file in the main menu...

-Go to the main menu.
-Click "SAVE FILES"
-Select old save.
-Done

I'm not sure, but i doubt that this need 10 year of gaming experience.

I only ever have 1 save. Namely the most recent one. Unfortunately there are no old ones!
