Energy beam XEN weapon
I just got hold of this. It's one of those major weapon mode replacements. It says that it does increasing damage the longer you keep firing.

The problem is it runs out of ammo very fast. And it seems to do a super low amount of damage. I appear to be much better off using my regular bullets. It also has ridiculously short range. More like a flamethrower than a laser.

Is there any way to make this non-crap?

Because it is a beam it goes through all enemies and hits everything. Great for clearing scorpions. With the Drum Core Gun which has increased ammo cap and potentially a mag boost main stat (not sure its worth losing 600-800 attack for) but you can get a bigger mag to have a longer lasting beam.

There are also some xens that would probably pair with it quite nicely, i just haven't spent the time to try and figure out which ones would be good. I tried a mending beam but it was very lackluster even with 4 Mendings.

Add Mend on it and you get a very nice repair beam.

"Beam" goes through enemies, Focus doesn't, which is what OP is talking about.

So I had thought this was gonna be a great thing to use, except unless I need to add ranged mods, it barely shot 10 ft in front of me. Ended up actually losing a tour for once because of that. I greatly regret not using the shooting range first because this has pretty much F'ED me for awhile.

WIth enough thrifty mods it will cost 1-2 ammo per shot and thus it can get pretty damaging if one fires continuously, plus if you put some piercing mods when above 80% HP it can start from higher damage to increase it even more, but the damage is still very lackluster. It also benefits from higher crit chance. Remember that if you stop firing even for a second it looses all accumulated damage.

I got it to deal about 1 mil damage for the whole mag (180, not modified), but it heavily depends on crits and at least one piercing mod when above 80% health. If this piercing mod is not there - the damage is not about 1 mil, but about 30k. Damage mods felt useless on this, stacking elemental entangles/lightstrikes felt useless as well (but 1 single elemental entangle felt nice).

And while it did deal that 1 mil damage - other mods deal 2x-4x times that, while offering more range and crowd control.

It really needs a buff of some kind.

Main thing to take into account with using Torment or Apex Predator in the Target Range you'll always get over inflated damage early on, and deflated damage later on due to Piercing doing 1% of the enemies CURRENT health per stack, so hitting 2mil w/ Focus and multiple Apex/Torment? Stupidly easy... then take it into combat and see that it takes 2 mags to kill a normal enemy as your DoT goes from 9k down to like 90...

Focus 100% NEEDs a buff, it's range and DPS is just too low... like I tested it against the Light XEN morph, w/ 2 Light Strike and 2 Thrifty, Light did 44k and Focus did 22k... which is a pathetic difference when you consider that Focus has an effective range of like 20m and I wouldn't be surprised if some enemies can melee you from outside of the things effective range.

So yeah, as far as I can tell, outside of using Focus as a repair beam, I literally cannot see a reason to use the thing,
