you need an advanced autoloader to automatically pick up ammo though, using blueprint and resources in City Ruins. when you place it there'll be a yellow zone on one side, it'll automatically pick up ammo crates in that yellow zone if its not full.
You can build an entire ring of these and have ammo everywhere everytime.
However i agree with sintri here you unlock them way to early.
I've tried an ammo belt setup and oh boy I need a LOT of Xenium ore for that. It is definitely the endgame automation to have Advanced Ammo makers (and the new shell makers) with belts to keep the entire outpost supplied during a siege without the need for you to go back and adjust much. Thus freeing you to mech around in a cataphract or wreck bots on foot.
a trick with the big one you get as above but build a wall near with a ammo maker or shell maker have 3x belts taking it to auto loader and you are done, then in RTS mode when you have about 6+ auto loaders you cycle each one and press Z to auto make ammo when you start blasting things it doesnt run out of ammo, unless a sneeky you know what gets past
two, sometimes you can have so much ammo going the belts drop a big pile in front of your now full autoloader, which can then spill out of the capture area.
