how do you upgrade to vanguard edition without buying the whole thing again?
Someone gifted me the base edition of the game and I want to upgrade to vanguard edition but it says I'd have to buy the whole thing again, I just want to buy the DLC and split the difference why isn't this a feature?

Unfortunately you can't simply upgrade since the vanguard edition isn't a DLC. Your best bet is to refund the gift and buy vanguard

it won't let me refund a gift :/ That is such a stupid idea to not have the ability to upgrade. Game devs figured this out a decade ago why do new games from veteran devs still make these most basic mistakes?

Yeah, not their brightest moment

As much as I agree that it should be a feature, they did list on the store page that upgrading to vanguard edition would not be possible, before the game opened up for purchases. I do recommend people to read through the descriptions for the products they are interested in purchasing or situations like these end up happening.

You can always try contacting steam support and see if they might do something to assist you in getting the money back from a gift. As a service worker myself I can confirm we do occassionally figure out ways to go around rules if its a respectable customer ;-)

The issue I take with this is just because they said it wouldn't be possible doesn't get them off the hook for setting it up that way. The way steam works 100% allows upgrades to be a thing, the vanguard edition item on their store isn't just an item unto itself, it's a bundle of the base edition + vanguard dlc, the fact they don't just list the vanguard dlc as a standalone item for the purposes of upgrading which is something steam totally allows and is easy to set up is an oversight of the highest calibre. As someone who's been part of projects that have published to steam before, this is very much possible with minimal effort.

OP said that the game was gifted to them. This is entirely on the dev's lack of foresight/flexibility

you can refund gifted games. if you go through the regular process rather than the option to refund the product you get a tickbox that gives the person that gifted it to you permission to refund the purchase instead. the money will go back to them though.
