Is the game difficult or am I bad?

I've been playing this game for a few days now and I'm really struggling to score.
I get the impression that my opponents just have to shoot in a straight line for it to go in, whereas when I try a direct shot, the opposing keeper always blocks.
If I don't try more complex tricks like passing behind the goal to bait the keeper, and then passing back to a team-mate to shoot, it doesn't go in.

Do I have to grind the main character's stats a lot to be able to score more easily? Or am I missing something? I'm on normal difficulty and scoring seems incredibly difficult, so far I haven't managed to get past the first game of Act 2...

Grinding the main characters stats a bit helps. If you are using a controller, use Right/Left trigger while skating with the puck to avoid the defense and draw the goalie out of position. You can then either take the shot yourself or set up a teammate for an easier goal with a one-timer. If you are position locking, you can press the pass button when you don't have the puck to call for your AI teammate to pass to you.

I don't know how familiar you are with hockey terminology but I've found that certain teams you play against require you to abandon certain strategies. I kept getting my sh*t tossed against the Grim Reaper team because I was relying on playing the body and counter attacking with long, vertical fast breakout passes to get a rush- problem is you will never have an odd man rush against the Grim Reapers, nor will you gain much advantage from body checking because of their teleport powers. So I abandoned that and changed to a more balanced attack, and starting aggressively forechecking in the offensive zone to maintain possession and create turnovers. I was getting killed by their rush before, but after the change I was able to beat them.
