Steel pickaxe

So i just found my first steel pick axe it has a condition on 7% how do i repair it? Or should i save it for when i find iron so i dont waist it

The pickaxe cannot be repaired. It can be smelt into steel lump(not sure about the name) but you are losing some metal in the process(25% material loss i think). So you need to add some steel in order to create a new one.
You can still use the tool even at 0% if i remember correctly but it will cost you more stamina
